The U.S. Industrial Pellet Association’s fifth-annual Exporting Pellets Conference was held Sept. 20 to 22 in Fontainebleau Miami Beach, Fla., and Dome Technology acted as a sponsor and exhibitor again this year, as it has been since the conference began.

The international event—the only of its kind in the U.S. sponsored by and for the industrial wood-pellet industry—drew more than 400 attendees, including wood producers, companies who produce and ship pellets, pellet consumers in the United States and Europe and vendors who service the industry.

According to USIPA vice president of policy and operations Jessica Brooks, “The key message was that there are many opportunities in both the traditional and emerging markets for industrial wood pellets and the entire bioenergy industry.” The annual utilities panel and producers panel allowed the audience “to hear directly from the major players on their thoughts on the market and what we may see over the next six to 12 months,” she said. Also, a new panel highlighted developments for the pellet market, including novel opportunities the U.S. Clean Power Plan may provide the domestic pellet market.

Attendance guarantees opportunities for participants to meet and grow their networks, but another benefit is the chance to learn more about the future of the wood pellets. “Our conference brings together hundreds of industry leaders and experts. We strive to put together an engaging and robust agenda each year that keeps current with market trends,” Brooks said.

According to Dome Technology sales manager and event participant Lane Roberts, the dome itself has become an increasingly familiar centerpiece for wood-pellet storage and processing; many conference presentations included photos and details of completed Dome Technology projects—a fact pointed out by other attendees who have worked with Roberts and his Dome Technology co-workers in the past, he said.

“A lot of our customers are not the end users, but they are other equipment suppliers who look after our back—they like us, they trust us,” he said. “There are so many people who know about us. If you’re in wood pellets, it’s hard to miss us.”

Sponsors like Dome Technology are essential to conference success. “Our attendees are there not only to get market and policy updates, but also to network and do business with companies throughout the supply chain,” Brooks said. “An exhibit hall full of industry leaders like Dome Technology helps accomplish that goal.”

One attendee of note was Nigel Adams, a member of Parliament representing a portion of northern England where multiple major power plants operate, including Drax. Adams plays a role in leveling the political field between three entities: American forestry standards, the United Kingdom law, and the European Union regulations regarding global warming and reducing the carbon footprint, Roberts said.

Storing dry cement requires careful planning. You need top-of-the-line storage facilities to do the job right. Dome advantages

Insulated concrete domes are taking the cement industry by storm. They are easier and less expensive to build than traditional storage facilities. It is also easier to protect dry cement over a longer period because of the waterproofing and insulation built into the concrete dome design.

Domes do not require a deep foundation like a traditional silo. They can be built in locations like ports where increased soil differential settlement can put a strain on a standard vertical silo. With the dome’s three-dimensional curve, and no need for internal supports, it ends up being much stronger under the pressure of shifting soils and can store a larger volume of dry cement than other storage facilities.

Temperature variation is also not an issue with a dome—especially the kind designed and built by Dome Technology. It is built with a single ply roof membrane and polyurethane insulation envelope woven into the design. This makes the dome virtually waterproof and free of condensation. It also prevents air temperature from fluctuating to warm or cool extremes—increasing the shelf life of the dry cement in storage.

Domes are more likely to maintain structural integrity in the face of natural disasters than other types of storage structures. Studies have shown that the thin shell of a concrete dome can stand up better under pressure from tornadoes, hurricanes and earthquakes. This can mean a lower risk of structural damage that could lead to extra costs replacing lost product.

Finding an efficient method to reclaim bulk materials like dry cement or fly ash can present a dilemma when using traditional storage facilities. You already have less space to store product and bulk material handling is usually less efficient because of the structural design.  For your business, this can mean extra costs lost to material that cannot be reclaimed over time.

A dome by Dome Technology can make the whole process of handling bulk material much easier. These structures are already better equipped for bulk material storage because they can utilize a higher percentage of internal structure volume than a warehouse or even a traditional silo.

Domes can also be designed to meet multiple material handling configurations. Useful reclamation systems that can be employed in dome silos include the mechanical screw and the fluidized floor.

Mechanical screw

Avoiding bulk material extraction using a front loader or another inefficient method is easy. Reclamation using a mechanical screw gets the job done much better.

A mechanical screw cuts into the bulk material pile, assisting in moving material toward the discharge opening where it can be collected.  Gravity works in the beginning to discharge bulk material until it hits the angle of repose. At that point, the mechanical screw takes over.  It draws cement to the center discharge opening located in the dome floor using a pneumatic conveyor pump.

Mechanical screws work in concert with gravity until the final reclamation phase. Then it takes over completely in moving bulk material to the opening.

Fluidized floor

Domes can also be designed to use a fluidized floor in the reclamation process. Fluidized floors offer even greater advantages beyond those offered with a mechanical screw system.

Fluidized floors offer complete floor coverage and clean out material at a nearly 100 percent rate. It requires lower power consumption than other reclamation systems. The fabric membrane used to fluidize material is durable and requires little maintenance. This system also allows for simultaneous filling and reclamation.

A typical fluidized floor is divided into zones. Sections within these zones can be activated individually until all the material in that section has been reclaimed or they can be activated in a timed sequence to draw down bulk material evenly.

Bulk material handling made simple

When you need to reclaim stored bulk materials, the job needs to be cost effective and efficient. Only using a dome can make material handling meet those parameters. A dome’s design allows for automatic reclamation systems that save both time and money.

Dome Technology inflated the first wood-pellet bulk-storage dome for Enviva at the Port of Wilmington, South Carolina.

The dome was inflated at about 4:30 a.m. Monday and took almost three hours to reach its full size. The next dome is under construction and is expected to go up in the next six weeks. Construction for the new facility at the Port of Wilmington is expected to be completed within the next nine months.

Jason Craig, construction project manager for Dome Technology, said construction of the new Enviva export facility began in March and will feature two 170-foot-tall storage domes with a capacity of 45,000 metric tons each. The first dome, which has an inside layer of foam and another layer of reinforced steel, was inflated Monday morning.  The second dome is about 80 percent complete and is expected to be inflated in the next six weeks.

Once completed, these domes can withstand winds up to 300 mph and will contain wood pellets produced from Enviva’s new $100 million Sampson County plant that is expected to manufacture more than 500,000 metric tons of wood pellets per year. The 400-acre site is about 70 miles northeast of Wilmington and pellets will be transported by truck and rail to the export terminal in Wilmington,

In recognition of National Small Business Week, U.S. Senator Jim Risch has named Dome Technology as the Idaho Small Business of the Day.  The company will be recognized in the Congressional Record of the United States Senate.

“I am pleased to recognize Dome Technology as an outstanding small business.  This is a company that has weathered economic adversity and made a rebound,” said Risch. “They diversified from only building storage domes, expanded internationally and have a steady demand for their quality product.  I congratulate them on their success.”

Senator Risch is the highest ranking republican on the Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship.  The committee oversees proposed legislation on matters relating to entrepreneurship and provides oversight of the Small Business Administration.  They also research, investigate, and report all problems relating to American’s small businesses to the full senate.

Dome Technology was officially awarded the contract to build the dome component of the City of Lumberton/Lumberton ISD Fine Arts Center in Hardin County, Texas. The project was awarded to by Daniels Building & Construction, Inc., the Beaumont-based general contractor on the project.

The new fine arts center, designed by architects Cutright & Allen Architects of La Grange, will be utilized as a 1,500-seat auditorium/convention center and will also function as a FEMA-compliant safe room with capacity for 1,133.  The project is scheduled for site work in June of 2013, with dome construction commencing in mid-July. Completion of the project is planned for the summer of 2014. Innovative features of the 25,447 square foot project include its low profile roofline and the use of insulated concrete forms (ICFs) by Nudura.

Dome Technology inflated a dome in Kaposvar, Hungary for its client. The sugar-storage dome will measure 192 feet in diameter and 126 feet tall. The inflation took less than one hour.

The dome will have the storage capacity of 60,000 metric tons of sugar and will include loading and reclaim systems.  Dome Technology is the general contractor on the project, which involved technical soil solutions including piles, extensive dewatering of the site, and reclaim tunnel.

Dome Technology broke ground for their new world headquarters next to its current complex. The building shell will be a 184 foot x 144 foot low-profile ellipse with a height of 30 feet. The building will have a 15,000-square-foot footprint with a 2,500-square-foot mezzanine. It is due to open in February 2014 and will add a striking new landmark to Idaho Falls.

Idaho Falls has been the company’s home for nearly 40 years and the new building is a demonstration of Dome Technology’s current success, its confidence in its future and its commitment to Idaho Falls. The building will be the biggest single expression of Dome Technology’s values and will be outstanding in its environmental commitment to tackling climate change.
