Dome Technologyโs new video highlighting the McInnis Cement dome project in Providence, Rhode Island, USA, is available now.
The DomeSilo is 134 feet in diameter with a storage capacity is 40,000 metric tons, and McInnis will continue utilizing existing flat storage as well. To maximize the terminalโs abilities, McInnis selected a barge unloader rated at an aggressive 800 metric tons per hour.
Dome Technology executed a prime contract directly with McInnis for the dome storage, structural steel and mechanical work for pneumatic transport and cement reclaim. More specifically, these tasks required installing a truck lane, steel storage silo, DomeSilo, structural-steel convey piping support, stair platform with connecting structural-steel bridge to the dome apex and a reclaim tunnel. The team also installed an FLSmidth Ful-Floor reclaim system.
In addition, piping on the loading side needed to be routed up and over the existing warehouse; it then was anchored to a structural stair tower as it climbed to the dome apex. Load bearing on the warehouse wasnโt an option, so a new truss and structural-steel supports carry the weight.
โDome Technology has been very good to work with. Theyโve been very flexible and accommodating,โ Demers said.

Construction of the new South Summit Fire Station 41 is complete, and a project summary is available here.
South Summit Fire Protection District selected a dome for its new fire station in Kamas, Utah, USA, just 15 miles from Park City.
The two-story station is 13,500 square feet and includes office and storage space as well as ample emergency-vehicle parking. The dome portion is 120 feet in diameter with a total ceiling height of 35 feet. The stationโs size allowed administrators to move their remote offices into the new building as well.
Fire-department personnel hosted an open house Sept. 19. Getting the Kamas Valley community on board with the innovative design was a challenge initially, but theyโve been pleased with the finished product, especially the interior, Station 41 captain and board commissioner Jackson Coleman said. โItโs going to help bring us into the future,โ he said.
According to Park City and Summit County news agency The Park Record, South Summit fire chief Scott Anderson said the completed building will protect against natural disasters and provide an emergency shelter for locals. The project cost $2.6 million; other bids ranged from $8 million to $14 million.

When approached by a coal company needing to store coal at the mine and wanting to reclaim 100 percent of product without personnel entering the storage facility, the ideal model was clear.
Hypothetically, a DomeSilo thatโs 105 feet in diameter and 150 feet tall would provide the desired storage, and to make things work optimally, a full hopper system with chevrons 25 feet tall would be built directly into the dome, eliminating the need for mechanical systems inside.
โThis doesnโt require any personnel inside the dome โ thereโs no mechanical inside the dome to go in and fix. The idea that we can make them really tall and skinny increases the live reclaim,โ Dome Technology sales manager Lane Roberts said.
With chevrons hoppers into the dome, product flows easily by way of gravity. And when engineered to the optimal angle, cleaning out the dome is no problem at all, not to mention the likelihood of aging in pile is diminished as product is naturally first in, first out.
But a lot of behind-the-scenes work was required before settling on this customized model.
Engineering the best option
When the customer asked about the optimal guts for its coal storage dome, the first thing the Dome Technology team did was to suggest, based on experience, the number of tunnels thought to be best, which was three. But the second step was determining the minimum angle at which product would flow properly. This angle would determine the angle of chevrons within the dome.
After identifying the hopper angle, Dome Technology calculated exactly how the company could save money while still achieving the reclaim and storage it wanted. The team tested different scenarios, changing up the number of tunnels and the number of chevrons but always keeping that hopper angle in mind. After figuring the costs of the different models, the team was confident more tunnels would cost less than more chevrons.
Chevrons arenโt a cheap install; each one requires massive amounts of concrete and steel. Increasing the number of tunnels would mean the chevrons wouldnโt have to reach so high, dropping that cost substantially.
โWe ran the model, and when we went down to two tunnels from three, the chevrons got so tall and the amount of concrete to form the chevrons doubled,โ Roberts said, increasing costs in construction materials (not to mention labor).
Returning to the original recommendation of three tunnels would also provide greater storage since the taller the chevron, the more space it consumes inside the dome. Shorter chevrons free up room for product.
By finding the perfect balance โ what number of tunnels best complements the appropriate chevron angle โ companies like this can achieve necessary storage and save money. Itโs the principle of design-build at its finest.
Why a full-hopper system works well for coal
The full-hopper system provides first-in, first out reclaim desirable with types of coal prone to spontaneous combustion. In general, domes are well suited for coal storage. DomeSilos make more storage possible within a smaller footprint โ the facility is built up, not out โ so companies can store more in a smaller footprint than warehouses or flat storage would allow. And the DomeSilo naturally protects product too โ an important quality when working with volatile coal.

Business has not slowed for Dome Technology as bulk companies continue to expand and enhance operations. Here are some of the recent and current projects:
For one company on the East Coast of the United States, Dome Technology fabricated 120,000 pounds of steel to be used as a structural tower in the wood-products industry. The project wrapped up June 23, and fabrication was completed in Dome Technologyโs steel-fabrication shop. Engineers and construction managers worked closely with team members who build features like stair towers, work towers, buildings, conveyor supports, handrails, and walkways to deliver on customer requests and needs.
Another current project is a grain DomeSilo in the Midwest, large enough to store 1.3 million bushels of soybeans and corn.
The dome stands 170 feet in diameter and 110 feet tall with a 1.3 million bushel grain capacity and was designed with a no-entry system and bin sweep. Construction on the ring beam and inflation were completed the end of June, and the dome will be operational by the end of September.
The dome was built at an existing company site, and โitโs going to allow them to blend out of this structure and load to rail directly. It will give them the capability to cycle that multiple times,โ said sales manager Heath Harrison, adding that the biggest advantage to the upgraded facility will be the no-entry feature. โNow itโs going to be more efficientโless manpower needed.โ
Dome Technology has also contracted with another wood-pellet producer to build a two-dome project in the southern United States. This new facility will feature two storage domes 90 feet in diameter and 135 feet tall. Both will store 10,000 metric tons and are designed with a live floor, โso there is no mechanical extraction or personnel needed to go in the dome,โ reducing operational costs significantly, said sales manager Lane Roberts. Product will be reclaimed on a first-in, first-out basis, and the domes will have state-of-the-art safety systems, including aeration and nitrogen, heat sensors, and gas-monitoring sensors.

โTis the season for hurricanes, so tropical storms are back in the news. But for members of the National Storm Shelter Association like Dome Technology, planning for the future and protecting people from natural disaster is a year-round focus.
The NSSA was formed in 2001 to ensure the highest quality of manufactured and constructed storm shelters that could protect people from injury or loss of life from the effects of tornadoes, hurricanes, and other natural disasters. The association is self-policing to maintain public confidence and respect for the storm shelter industry.
Dome Technology is a long-standing NSSA member, and sales manager Daren Wheeler sits on the NSSA board as communication vice president. The board is comprised of representatives from groups like Huckabee and Vaughn Concrete Products, with Michelle Guymon Barbee of Safe Sheds serving as this yearโs president. NSSA provides objective information about building FEMA-approved storm shelters, and the website provides listings for suppliers and contractors with experience building shelters.
According to Wheeler, the benefit of getting involved in NSSA is โhaving a seat at the tableโ to discuss current issues and provide or receive input about what happens in the world of storm shelters. Of interest this year are revisions to ICC 500, the FEMA building code for storm shelters. NSSA members are invited to review the proposed revisions and submit comment.

While Dome Technology worked on the Rhode Island project, McInnis Cement called with an unrelated question: Could Dome Technology also install an additional truck loadout lane at an existing terminal in The Bronx, New York?
The Bronx terminal was already a unique facility in a unique position, situated โin deep enough water to enable berthing of large vessels, which is not the case for our major competitors,โ Forlini said. Expansion would bolster its potential even more.
Within 130 days of construction starting, Dome Technology completed an additional truck bay for the Bronx facility, including concrete ramps and footing for the structural steel, mechanical equipment, piping and structural-steel installation. The team executed all structural and millwright work, and operations at the facility were not interrupted during construction.

Dome Technology recently completed two projects for McInnis. As part of its efforts to grow business, McInnis built a facility in Providence, Rhode Island, and after two years in operation, the company was ready for an upgrade featuring a new DomeSilo for cement storage that would supplement existing flat storage.
โThe initial 30,000-ton flat-storage warehouse has been very functional, and it will continue to be used in conjunction with the new storage dome. However, the dome storage was selected for the expansion because the warehouse operations had various limitations. While reclaiming from, it was difficult to offload a ship in a timely fashion,โ said project director Dominic Demers, adding that unloading would often pause for 10 to 12 hours a day during warehouse reclaim operations. โFor phase two, we wanted to combine operation flexibility and maximum utilization of our growing marine fleet.โ

A dome is truly a non-traditional option architecturally, and some might not fancy a domed roof on top of their commercial building. But a low-profile roof is one way to achieve the same dome benefits with a discreet roofline.
Dome Technology has developed a low-profile dome concept, which means the roof is still curved but in a more subtle wayโso subtle that itโs often difficult to see the roof at all when approaching the building.
To accommodate a flatter, sleeker dome roof, post-tension reinforcing is often used where the dome and vertical wall interface.
These roofs can be finished in multiple ways, from tile and pavers to a โgreenโ roof made of grass. All options are built upon an impermeable membrane, so leaks are never an issue.
